Have Better Luck When Securing a Job!Graduating from college is a major accomplishment and takes years of hard work, study, dedication, and research. But once you graduate, the hunt for a job begins. While some people may find a job right out of college, this isn’t always the case. There is often a lot of competition for positions, and the job markets in some places might be a little more difficult to break into. But thankfully, there are some things you can do to have better luck when it comes to securing a job as a new graduate. Without any further ado, this article brought to you by Quizplus is going to go over some helpful tips for landing your first job after finishing college. Build a Great ResumeWhile things like your interview are crucial to landing a role, it is often your resume that gets your foot in the door. Your resume should not only describe what employers can expect from you as an employee, but they should also stand out enough to separate you from the sea of other resumes that many companies get from new grads. For example, resume metrics matter. Find ways to include numbers and stats in your resume, to show off the results you were able to achieve, in addition to the things you know and have done. In addition to that, make sure you tailor your resume for each position, and scour through job descriptions or postings to find the kind of keywords to include and things to mention. Make sure the resume flows well, isn’t too long, is easy to navigate and skim, and is free from grammatical errors. It may take some time to sift through your resume to ensure it's perfect, but the work is worth it. Network Early and Often Oftentimes, landing a job is more about who you know than what you know. As a result, make sure you are taking every opportunity to network as a new grad. This could be at career fairs in your city, at galas or events, at conventions, or even online through social media platforms like LinkedIn. Familiarize yourself with how to best network as a graduate, too. This includes networking with other recent grads, volunteering, getting to know your professors during or after your studies, finding a mentor, and potentially even becoming an intern. Not everyone is comfortable networking, but doing it is a great way to meet people and form connections/relationships that could help you greatly during a job search and throughout your career. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, as a little bit of effort to build bonds can go a long way. For more advice on networking, watch this video: Use the Career Center of Your College
Most colleges will have a career center or career services department that provides plenty of resources for new students and recent graduates when it comes to their career. In addition to connecting you with potential employers, these centers can also help guide you to specific positions, or help you learn the options available to you. In addition to that, they can review your resume, set up mock interviews, help you make connections, and build up your knowledge about a certain industry or niche. Best of all, their services will generally be completely free for students or new graduates to take advantage of. If you are a fresh grad who needs some assistance to find the right job or ensure you are leading off with the right foot, one of your first stops should be the career center of your college. While job hunting can be a time-consuming process, using the right resources and strategies to aid you with your studies can make all the difference.
